Colonial respones to WG Grace on his two Australian cricket tours differed. As a young man he was generally feted as an English and British Empire hero, a wonder of the age. Subsequently he was frequently despised for his trickery and gamesmanship. This story was first related as an honours thesis twenty-two years ago and has probably had only a handful of readers since. It is shared now with the aim of wider appreciation.
