I was the convenor of the Australian Society for Sports History conference held in Adelaide in 2001. This is a selection of 14 papers edited by me and delivered on the main themes of identity and narrative in Australian sport. Included are the keynote addresses by Graeme Davison, Gideon Haigh and Jack Williams. The book takes its title from Professor Davison’s paper which was later published with modifications in Meanjin.
